LINK: tinyurl.com The Hollies are an English rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from through out East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the era. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. The original lineup included Allan Clarke as lead vocalist, Graham Nash as guitarist and vocalist, Vic Steele (real name Vic Farrell) on guitar, with Eric Haydock and Don Rathbone rounding out the group on bass guitar and drums. Steele left in May 1963, shortly before they signed to Parlophone as label-mates of the Beatles. Tony Hicks, who replaced him, and Bobby Elliott, who replaced Rathbone, joined the band in quick succession in 1963; both had played in a Nelson-based band, the Dolphins, Bernie Calvert, who replaced Haydock in 1966, was also a Dolphin member. Mopreme Shakur, (born 1969 in New York as Maurice Harding) originally known as Wycked, is a West Coast rapper and was born in South Jamaica, Queens, New York. As a child Mopreme lived with his father, Mutulu Shakur, his fathers wife, Afeni Shakur and his younger brother Tupac Shakur. He is the older step-brother of slain rapper Tupac Shakur and son of Mutulu Shakur. In 1982, while Maurice was still a pre-teen, his father Mutulu became a fugitive wanted by the FBI, charged in part with having aided Maurice's aunt, Assata Shakur, to escape from prison in New Jersey, where she had been incarcerated for the murder and wounding of two state troopers. LINK: tinyurl.com The Turtles were one of the more enjoyable American pop groups of the 1960s, moving from folk-rock inspired by the Byrds to a sparkling fusion of Zombies-inspired chamber-pop and straight-ahead good-time pop reminiscent of the Lovin' Spoonful, the whole infused with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of dual frontmen Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Though they hit number one in 1967 with the infectious "Happy Together," the Turtles scored only three more Top Ten hits and broke up by the end of the '60s. Kaylan and Volman later joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention during the early '70s and also recorded themselves as Flo & Eddie, but were on the oldies circuit with a revamped Turtles by the mid-'80s. Born within two months of each other in 1947 (though on opposite coasts), Howard Kaylan (b. Howard Kaplan) and Mark Volman attended the same school, Westchester High in Los Angeles (Kaylan had moved from New York as a child). The two sang in the school's a cappella choir, where Volman soon heard about Kaylan's instrumental surf group, the Nightriders (which also included choir members Al Nichol on lead guitar, Don Murray on drums and Chuck Portz on bass). Stavros Kougioumtzis (1932-2005), from Thessalonica, one of the greatest greek composers of all times, composed this song "Mi mou thimonis matia mou" (Don't be angry with me, dear) in the 60s. Thessalonica was his great love and Stavros walked a lot with his frainds, he knew every corner there. In the afternoons, Stavros used to go for a walk down the coast, meet his fraind and talk, so some day going usually on foot he passed by a friend who had a record shop. He told a Stavros, "I want you to listen a new song". It was the song "Ime aitos horis ftera" (I'm an eagle without wings) with music by Manos Hadjidakis, lyricks by Efthia Papagiannopoulou, singed by Grigoris Bithikotsis in 1963. He was so excited by the structure and tension of the song, that he felt lika doing something about it. Luckily, the friend he was to meet came half an hour late, so his own excitment and his friend's delay, were the reasons that both, the music and the lyrics was written in just a half an hour, during a walk along the coast. He first recorded the choral song 1964 and the song was initially titled "Apoheretismos" (Farewell). Second recording of the song was at 1965. Alekos Patsifas had made the music comapny "Lyra". He believed in Stavros, so he signed him to Lyra. They decided that those choral songs should also be sung solo. They began with "Mi mou thimonis matia mou". He was born in the village of Luna in Rajasthan, British India in 1927 into a family of rich traditional musicians. He claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant. Kala means "Art" and Kalawant means "artist" (in any Indian language). He received his musical training under his father, Ustad Azeem Khan and his uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were classical musicians, well-versed in dhrupad singing. They instructed him in classical music and voice production within the framework of classical forms of thumri, dhrupad, khayal and dadra, from the young age of eight. Hassan started to perform at a young age and the first concert of dhrupad and kheyal with his elder brother is reported to have been held in Fazilka Bungla near Ferozepur[1]. After the Partition of India, 20-year-old Hassan and his family migrated to Pakistan and suffered severe financial hardships. Singers like Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson also did a great deal to pioneer the form, but Charles did even more to devise a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. Then there was his singing; his style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th century performer, up there with the likes of Elvis and Billie Holiday. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and '60s work, however, can't obscure the fact that he made few classic tracks after the mid-'60s, though he recorded often and performed until the year before his death. Blind since the age of six (from glaucoma), Charles studied composition and learned many instruments at the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and the Blind. His parents had died by his early teens, and he worked as a musician in Florida for a while before using his savings to move to Seattle in 1947.
